Abstract
The preceding paper by Schmitz suggests a mechanism of the oscillating Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction that differs significantly from the mechanism previously proposed by Field, Körös, and Noyes. The most important differences are associated with the mechanism assumed for the oxidation of cerium(III) by bromate. The alternative mechanisms for this oxidation are examined and compared with relevant experimental information on similar systems. We conclude the mechanism developed by Schmitz and associates is inconsistent with several observations and that it is doubtful it can be the correct interpretation of this reaction. Keywords
