Difficulties in the Diagnosis of Congenital Abnormalities

Abstract
Study of 176 children for abnormalities following infection with or exposure to rubella during gestation confirmed an earlier report that certain abnormalities cannot be recognized in early infancy. Some peculiarities at first thought abnormal were later proved to be normal. The first examination at 4 to 12 months of age revealed 32 definite and 27 questionable abnormalities in 35 of the 176 children. On the second examination at 16 to 25 months, only 7 of the questionable abnormalities proved to be significant, but 12 previously unsuspected serious abnormalities were found. In the absence of reliable diagnostic criteria for children less than one year of age, data on the frequency of congenital defects must be interpreted with caution.
