Abstract
The psychometric properties of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were examined. Participants were mildly and moderately depressed elders involved in a self-help treatment program. Results suggest that the GDS possesses concurrent validity and sensitivity to change equivalent to the Beck Depression Inventory. Choice of self-report assessment instrument may be directed by characteristics of the target population. Additional research demonstrating the sensitivity of the GDS to changes in depression is needed.
