Abstract
A simulation experiment was used to test the effectiveness of three common factor analytic hypothesis-testing techniques over a range of data conditions typical of empirical research. Overall, target analysis is recommended in the early stages of knowledge of factor patterns, and confirmatory factor analysis is recommended when there is detailed understanding of the data structure. Keywords
