Abstract
The total illuminance (encircled energy) is computed via diffraction theory from the lens design data. Only rotationally symmetric aberrations are considered. Numerical results are presented for optimum balanced wavefronts. In addition a study is made of the effect of focal length on the total illuminance of a set of aspheric and spherical doublets. Keywords
