Use of peat in the removal of oil from produced waters

Abstract
Horticultural peat Was used in this study to assess its potential for the removal of oil from produced waters recovered from the petroleum field operations. Isotherm analyses of the kinetic data showed that generally the adsorption pattern followed the Langmuir and the Freundlich isotherms. Column studies using a 300 mm depth of peat on an 8‐hour run with flow rates of 12 and 48 mL min‐1 (2.13 and 8.52 md‐1) showed an average oil removal of approximately 80%. Scale‐up and kinetic models based on column breakthrough data, were utilized to design a peat adsorption column for treating a flow of 150 m3 d‐1 produced waters.
