Abstract
New experimental data are reported concerning the nitridation of Ti and Zr samples by powerful, multi-pulse TEA CO2 laser irradiation while the samples are under a layer of liquid nitrogen. A comparison with the results obtained with similar irradiations performed in technical nitrogen is given. The results are discussed, with particular reference to how they are affected by the oxidation process, which has an effect because of the oxygen dissolved into the liquid nitrogen. Keywords
