Autonomic Cardiac Reactivity in Premature Infants

Abstract
In a series of observations on 49 premature infants, marked autonomic cardiac reactivity has been found in greater than 3/4ths of the group. Responses to feeding, oculocardiac, carotid sinus and anterior fontanel pressure were examined. These were predominantly of an inhibitory nature. They consisted for the most part of sudden rate changes and alterations in P wave configuration, coincident with stimulation. Slowings of over 100 beats/minute were seen on 25 occasions. The possible mechanisms involved in this reactivity are examined, and the context of these responses to fetal perinatal adjustment is discussed.
