Abstract

CYSTS OF THE adrenal gland are rare, especially those of sufficient size to be detected clinically. Most of those recorded in the literature have been small lesions discovered accidentally at autopsy. The few reported cases of large cysts have invariably presented difficult problems in diagnosis and clinical management. The purpose of this paper is (1) to report the largest adrenal cyst on record, (2) to review the literature, and (3) to discuss briefly the cause, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of this unusual condition. Historical Review The first case of adrenal cyst was reported in 1670 by Greiselius¹ in Vienna. It was discovered at the autopsy of a 45-year-old man whose death resulted from rupture of the cyst.
