Abstract
One of the first university libraries to employ the Plessey ‘library pen’ system, a recent convert to MARC, and a prolific user of tape typewriters for the production of machine‐readable bibliographic records, the Library of the New University of Ulster has become deeply committed to automation. This paper describes the nature and development of this commitment and outlines the methods that were employed to automate ‘housekeeping’ routines between 1972 and 1975.Keywords
