Abstract
Plasma and erythrocyte Mg concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 10 patients with Huntington''s chorea. No abnormalities were seen in periodic estimations over 9 months in 9 of the patients. The one patient with increased erythrocyte Mg concentration was in the terminal stages of illness. A positive correlation between erythrocyte Mg concentration and duration of symptoms was noted. Any defect in Mg metabolism in Huntington''s chorea may not be reflected by changes in plasma or erythrocyte concentrations except after many years of the illness. Future techniques may reveal some form of intracellular deficit or excess, perhaps at the neuromuscular junction or in ganglion cells. This publication has 25 references indexed in Scilit:
