Abstract
The generation of hot, high-density plasmas with 3.5 ps, 1 J KrF laser pulsed focused onto solid targets with irradiances up to 1017 W cm-2 has been studied using time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy. Fully ionized aluminium plasmas were observed, and densities above 1023 cm-3 were inferred from observations of Stark widths and continuum lowering. The experimental observations were modelled with a 1D hydrodynamic code. Keywords
