The Impact of Retirement Migration on the South

Abstract
This paper examines the proposition that retirement migration is Grant's revenge on the South. A careful summary and analysis of recent research on elderly migration shows, however, that except for Florida and two border states, most older migrants into Southern states come from other states in the region; furthermore, the return migration rate is higher in the South than in other regions. Most Southern in-migrants, thus, are present or former Southerners. Seen in this way, retirement migration to the non-Florida South does not justify the fear that Northern in-migrants will over-burden local aging services.
