Abstract
An expression is derived which can be used to calculate the quantity of light available for collection at one surface of a rectangular scintillation counter in which the total internal reflection method of light collection is used, and under conditions in which there is no loss of light by absorption. Methods of correcting the expression to allow for light absorption are applied in order to derive the theoretical response to scintillations at any position along the central axis and an extreme axis of a rectangular block (61 cm*40.5 cm*6.3 cm) of refractive index 1.5. Results obtained using an experimental model of the same dimensions are in good agreement with the theory. The value of the expression in counter design is discussed. Keywords
