Calcium sources for growth of Musculium securis (Bivalvia: Pisidiidae)

Abstract
In order to determine the primary source of Ca for a pisidiid, M. securis was grown in laboratory in dishes with autoclaved or unautoclaved leaves and sediment and with or without algae. Although leaves and sediment provide Ca, the Ca from leaves is more readily available than Ca from sediment. Mollusks which exhibit correlations between Ca contents of the shell and environment utilize Ca from the bedrock; mollusks (e.g., M. securis) which exhibit no such correlations utilizes probably Ca from other sources such as allochthonous material (e.g., leaf litter).
