Abstract
In this letter, we report the first attempt to determine the grain-boundary enthalpy and its grain size dependence in a nanocrystalline (NC) element. Nanocrystallization of amorphous Se was achieved by isothermal annealing. Calorimetric measurements showed that the grain-boundary enthalpy decreases with a reduction in the grain size of the NC Se samples. This behaviour, which is consistent with other related measurements and computer simulation results, implies that the intrinsic nature of a grain boundary in polycrystals changes with the dimension of crystallites in the nanometre regime. Keywords
