Abstract
The mothers of 50 children enrolling in a behavioral weight reduction program completed Achenbach's (1978) Child Behavior Checklist prior to any intervention. Examination of the behavior problem and social competence scores of these children suggest that they are experiencing difficulties to a greater degree than the general population but to a lesser extent than children referred to psychological/psychiatric clinics. Social withdrawal for boys and somatic complaints for girls seem to be particularly problematic. The relationship of both degree of overweight and social stigmatization to behavior problems among obese children remains unclear. Keywords
