CRYOLITE: A MEDIUM FOR THE STUDY OF BURROWING AQUATIC ORGANISMS1

Abstract
Cryolite (Na3AlF6), a naturally occurring mineral, has an index of refraction nearly identical to that of seawater and thus can provide an almost transparent medium for the study of burrowing marine organisms and the sedimentary modifications which they produce. The specific gravity of cryolite is similar to that of the components of normal sediments, and substrates with any desired grain size can be easily prepared.
