Abstract
A quantitative analysis of episodes and symptom-free intervals in the course of manic-depressive psychosis was attempted. Patients (1066) were investigated by a mail questionnaire and subsequent review of hospital records. There was no difference between the reply group and nonreply group in terms of demographic status. Of the patients, .apprx. 6.2% were chronically ill. Of the patients, 18% were dead at the time of study. The number of episodes was .apprx. 3 in depression and .apprx. 7 in bipolar types during 12 yr of observation. The length of symptom-free interval between episodes was .apprx. 5 yr in depression and 2 yr in bipolar types. There was no difference in the number of episodes or in the length of interval between 1955-1959 and 1960-1965 group. The change of length was not confirmed between early and late intervals. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
