Abstract
Repeated intraven. injns. of 100 mg. of tetraethyl ammonium chloride into normal dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital completely overcame tachyphylaxis induced by repeated injn. of renin. The response to angiotonin itself was also enhanced. Even more marked was the manyfold increase in the reaction to adrenalin at a time when the response to nicotine was completely abolished. The responses to histamine, mecholyl, and BaCl2 were generally also enhanced. The same results occurred without anesthesia but to a lesser degree. Adrenalectomy or nephrectomy did not change the reactions. The responses to renin were increased if the caudal spinal cord was destroyed after section at C8 and the animal tested the next day after recovery from the anesthetic. Eight injns. of renin did not lead to appreciable tachyphylaxis after that, and admn. of tetraethyl ammonium ion did not further augment the already large response.
