Abstract
In this paper a new approximation is advanced for the calculation of non-radiative transition rates in a solid for which the electron-phonon coupling is linear. This scheme is exact in both low and high temperature situations and reduces to the Huang -Rhys expression in the single frequency limit. On the basis of numerical calculations, it is concluded that this new approximate scheme is adequate for a quantitative description of the energy gap law and of the temperature dependence of non-radiative decay rates in solids. Keywords
