Abstract
The 3rd chromosome recessive gene dsx, when in homozygous condition, causes both XX and XY individuals to develop as intersexes. The phenotypes of these 2 are extremely similar, and it is necessary to rely on X chromosome markers to be certain of the proper classification. Both types have male and female ducts and accessory structures but only one pair of gonads; the bristle pattern on the foreleg basitarsus is intermediate between maleness and femaleness. The gross internal and external anatomy of the doublesexes are described. Probably the gene acts at a time prior to the development of maleness or femaleness and establishes the hermaphroditic pattern that is altered only slightly by XX or XY chromosomal constitution.
