Abstract
The objectives of epidemiologic study of chronic diseases are discussed. A classification of types of study is offered, based on the kind of "denominator" information obtained. Illustrations are presented of investigations employing different sorts of denominators, or estimates of the frequency in the population of the attributes under study in relation to a disease. Keywords
