Abstract
The occurrence of oscillatory solutions to the Bénard problem in the presence of horizontal temperature gradients is investigated as a function of Prandtl number and of the ratio of the applied vertical and horizontal gradients using a linear, mean field approximation. It is shown that in low Prandtl number fluids, even small horizontal gradients readily generate oscillatory modes. Keywords
