Abstract
Fast-neutron activation cross sections for the mercury isotopes have been measured relative to the Fe56(n,p)Mn56 cross section. Enriched and natural-isotopic-abundance samples of Hg compounds were irradiated with 14.1±0.5-MeV neutrons. The activities produced were determined by observing the γ radiation with a Ge(Li) detector. The following cross sections (in millibarns) were determined: Hg196(n,2n)Hg195m, 1060±70; Hg198(n,2n)Hg197m, 900±70; Hg198(n,2n)Hg197g, 940±100; Hg198(n,p)Au198, 4.7±0.3; Hg199(n,p)Au199, 4.6±0.6; Hg200(n,2n)Hg199m, 880±60; Hg200(n,α)Pt197, 0.2±0.1; Hg201(n,p)Au201, 1.5±0.7; and Hg204(n,2n)Hg203, 2060±190.
