Abstract
The Helvetic, or Dauphinois, zone is represented in Switzerland by a group of Helvetian nappes, and in France by a bundle of Subalpine folds. The Morcles nappe, the lowermost of the Helvetian nappes, is traced southward and shown to pass into Subalpine folds. The reason advanced for the difference in the mode of deformation is that in France the Mesozoic is represented by a uniform series which behaved structurally as a unit, whereas the varied formations of the Mesozoic in Switzerland reacted differentially.
