Coliform Bacteria in Redwood Storage Tanks

Abstract
During the past few years, several water systems operating under permits from the California State Department of Public Health have shown unsatisfactory bacteriologic results in their finished product despite the absence of any significant sanitary defects in the treatment process. The systems all included new or relatively new redwood storage tanks. Re‐evaluation of the data already collected and re‐examination of some systems with the supposition that redwood tanks might somehow be associated with the development of coliform bacteria in the water showed that water of good bacteriologic quality entered the tanks, yet bacteriologically degraded water left them. With attention clearly focused on the tank and its effects on water quality, systematic control programs were undertaken to correct the condition and to examine the role of redwood in the problem. These attempts at control also demonstrated that control was possible and that the use of redwood as a tank construction material need not be discontinued.
