Reexamination of the Deleterious Effects of Gastrointestinal Contrast Material on Abdominal Echography

Abstract
Diagnostic ultrasound examinations of the abdomen are usually performed prior to Ba studies due to deleterious effects of gastrointestinal contrast material on abdominal echography. The classic in vitro study was repeated, extending experiment time. As Ba settled, ultrasound was able to penetrate Ba filled masses. A clinical case of Ba filled stomach secondary to gastric outlet obstruction was presented in support of in vitro findings. Patients with persistent collections of Ba of 1 or 2 days'' duration may undergo abdominal ultrasonic examinations.
