Abstract
A method for eluting poliomyelitis virus from cotton swabs suspended in a medium at pH values ranging from 4 to 8.1 is described. The Lansing strain of poliomyelitis virus was eluted from cotton fiber best at pH 8 using 1:100 and 1:500 dilution of virus. The mortality rate in mice increased with increasing acidity of the mouse brain-virus suspensions. Elution of virus is optimal at an alkaline pH. To obtain opt. mortality rates the eluate should be made acid before it is inoculated into mice.
