Abstract
The relative retentions and retention indices were obtained for approximately 250 compounds on squalane at four temperatures. The retention index varied linearly with the column temperature over the range of 27 to 86°C. The magnitude of the variation increased with an increase in the minimum cross sectional area of the molecule. The largest deviations measured amounted to 0.42 index units per degree. In high efficiency columns, a pair of compounds may exhibit a complete reversal in elution order over a temperature span of 12°C with nearly baseline separation at each limit. Thus, a knowledge of the variation of the retention index with temperature is essential for good capillary column work. Keywords
