AN ACOUSTIC RESPIROGRAPH. A METHOD FOR THE STUDY OF RESPIRATION THROUGH THE GRAPHIC RECORDING OF THE BREATH SOUNDS

Abstract
Breath sounds were recorded on a moving tape by rectifying the alternating currents corresponding to the random frequencies of the respiratory sound. This produced a voltage which varied directly with the intensity of the breath sound and which actuated an ink-writing magnetic recorder. This method of recording respiration has certain advantages. It is relatively inertia-free and offers no obstruction either to the flow of air or to respiratory movements. The subject is not necessarily aware that his respiration is being studied.
