Effects of Guanidine Salts on the Spectral Properties of Cytochrome c*

Abstract
The absorption peaks of cytochrome c were found to shift in the presence of high concentrations of guanidine salts. The α-band shifted from 550 mμ to 554 mμ, the β-band from 520 mμ to 524 mμ and the γ from 415 mμ to 421 mμ. Guanidine sulphate and carbonate were as well effective as the hydrochloride. Similar shifts of the absorption bands could also be observed when a cytochrome c solution was heated and spectroscopically observed while it was still hot. A bacterial proteinase digest of cytochrome c containing a haemopeptide or haemopeptides. behaved in the same way as intact cytochrome c in these respects.
