Abstract
The zonation of the intertidal fauna of the rocky shores of Barbados is described. Although the tidal range is less than 4 ft, the vertical range of the fauna is, in certain situations, much wider. Wave action is shown to be an important factor in extending the vertical range while temperature and exposure influence distribution. The biology of the common species is described, with emphasis on their reproductive and larval ecology. The majority of the species are copulators and are ovoviviparous or produce egg capsules. There is a marked tendency for the larvae to have a short pelagic life.
