Abstract
Alberta's 1996 introduction of performance‐based funding in its universities, colleges and technical institutes is a substantial departure from previous Canadian practice. This article describes the origin and implementation of the 2‐year pilot project and outlines several conceptual and technical deficiencies.Keywords
