Abstract
It is shown that by a means of a canonical transformation in quantum electrodynamics, the photon self-energy and the current associated with a mixture of zero-photon and one-photon states cannot be simultaneously made to vanish to order . This difficulty can be overcome by adding a charged Bose meson field.
