Abstract
The article presents a study conducted in 1970 among firms regarding the extent of use of operations research (OR) techniques in corporate planning. A questionnaire was sent out to the companies listed as “Fortune 500” companies for 1970. One hundred thirty seven companies replied to the questionnaires, which asked if their firm had an established, formalized long range planning function. Ninety two of those replied that they had a formal business planning function. According to the author, the results indicate that many successful companies rely on and recognize the importance of OR in the planning process.
