Abstract
The purpose of this study is to obtain a picture of the ventricular system by means of echo-encephalography in newborns and infants. The various problems as provided by the data from 193 babies under 12 months of age, are discussed. The midline determinations have proved to be reliable only if taken separately i. e. without paying attention to the reflections of the ventricles. The larger diameter found in newborns for the third ventricle must be caused by a cavum septi pellucidi, a frequent phenomenon in newborns. This statement corroborates with the literature and postmortem studies. Equally we can explain the larger ventricle index by a broad septum, also common in the newborn period.
