Abstract
The evolution of concepts concerning the identity and the functions of neuroglia is traced. Some of the main ideas in the works of Virchow, Deiters, Golgi, Lenhossék, Lugaro, Ramón y Cajal, del Río‐Hortega, Achúcarro, Penfield, and others are highlighted.Keywords
