Abstract
The interaction energy of a point charge external to a semi-infinite cubic lattice is calculated from the self-consistent solution for the driven atomic dipoles. The static local fields are calculated for a lattice of polarizable nonpolar point atoms. The energy is expressed as a power series in the atomic polarizability; analytical and numerical results for the first two coefficients in the series are given over a wide range of charge-lattice separations. A modified continuum electrostatic-image energy is remarkably accurate for charge-lattice separations down to one lattice spacing. Keywords
