Abstract
Mononuclear agranulocytes from rat peritoneal exudate were grown in a single layer in a medium containing rat serum, chick embryo extract, modified Tyrode''s soln. penicillin and phenol red. 2-wk. cultures consist of a syncytium of fibroblasts interspersed with numerous macrophages. Obligate intracellular parasites (Trypanosoma cruzi, leishmaniform stage) grow well in the fibroblasts. The macrophages are phagocytic. Cultures of this type are suitable for opsonic tests, drug testing or other procedures requiring the exposure of a single layer of such normal or parasitized mammalian cells to a supernatant liquid phase. Keywords
