ECONOMICS AND GENERAL SYSTEMS†

Abstract
The major areas of discussion in this paper are: (1) The theoretical contributions of economics to other disciplines, particularly general systems theory, with specific reference to the economic theories of general equilibrium and behavior. (2) The significance of the economic theories of optimization, suboptimization, viability and survival, and location, both generally and specifically with regard to management, operation research, political science and international systems. (3) Consideration of the possible impact of cybernetics, population analysis and the theory of the optimum size of the organization on economics, and of the problem of recent failures in economics: how far are these due to the failure of economics to use insights from other disciplines, especially general systems theory?
