Abstract
The cognitively impaired elderly are often cared for by their families, but little clinical intervention has been aimed at helping families to cope with behavior problems related to dementia. The inability of families to manage behavior problems related to cognitive impairment is a major reason for institutionalization of the elderly and a major cause of stress in caretakers. The author proposes that families may benefit from learning behavior management strategies which have been successfully utilized with institutionalized elderly. Several case examples of a family-behavioral approach are discussed. Keywords
