THE FALLACY OF THE FAT IRON-DEFICIENT CHILD

Abstract
The charts of 156 children with nutritional iron-deficiency anemia were reviewed to re-examine the popular impression that such children are usually fat. Instead, a marked preponderance of underweight children was found. Treatment with iron resulted in accelerated weight gain in these children, producing a normal distribution curve. Growth curves prior to the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia showed a common pattern of early rapid weight gain with subsequent slowing as the anemia developed.
