Patterns of Medical Care Related to Mental Illness

Abstract
A pilot study in 3 medical groups of Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York examined the role of family physician in treating mental and emotional problems during regular practice. Interviews were conducted with both doctors and patients. Findings indicate the importance of the family physician in diagnosing N-P [neuropsychiatric] problems, providing drugs and counsel, and as a means to further treatment. For about 3/4 of the N-P patients, family doctor provided the only care received.
