Phonon spectroscopy of fast-relaxing centres in Al2O3

Abstract
Measurements have been made of frequency crossing signals in the magnetothermal resistivity of Al2O3. These occur when the frequencies of two resonant scattering centres become equal and they provide spectroscopic information on those impurity or defect centres present which interact with phonons. Nine samples were examined after various treatments and the angular dependences of the signals are compared with those for S=1, S=3/2 and 2E centres and with specific centres with S>3/2. A number of tentative assignments have been made.
