Note on the Ability of Certain Strains of Rhizobi from Peas and Clover to Infect Each Other's Host Plants

Abstract
Gross-inoculation tests were made at 2 institutions to study the question of whether root nodule bacteria for peas could produce nodules on clover, and vice versa. Previous to the tests, and after, the cultures were studied to determine their serological reactions, and thus to detect contamination. Both red clover bacteria and pea nodule bacteria produced nodules on plants for the other. "The formation of nodules on such cross inoculations, however, took place only to a limited extent, and, at least in the case of pea strains on clover, after an unusually long interval. In no case did the host plant derive visible benefit from the strain belonging to the other inoculation group. The fact that only certain strains will cross-inoculate may explain the disagreement in the findings of other workers.".
