Abstract
Some of the problems involved in designing trusses of minimum weight can be overcome by generating a sequence of structures each of which is optimal for a fixed displacement vector. This technique will be referred to as the Sequence of Fixed Displacement Optima (SFDO) method, and in principle enables the optimal layout to be found at the same time as the optimal cross-sectional areas. The main aim of this paper is to propose a general SFDO formulation of the optimal truss problem and to relate two independently proposed approaches to this in order to assess their validity and to suggest further developments. Keywords
