Abstract
The availability of a suitable screening test does not justify screening for a disease unless the disease is important, relatively prevalent, and amenable to early treatment. Screening for a disease which has the necessary characteristics cannot be justified unless there is an acceptable, reliable and valid test which can be carried out at reasonable cost. Screening which is carried out without knowledge and consideration of these criteria is likely to be wasteful of scarce medical resources and may actually do more harm than good. Keywords
