Limitations of Arteriography in Determining Operability for Femoropopliteal Occlusive Disease

Abstract
Eight of 84 patients subjected to 106 femoral artery angioplastic procedures were found to have no demonstrable "run-off" vasculature by femoral arteriography. The fallibility of femoral arteriography in certain patients as the deciding factor in attempting reconstructive arterial surgery is described. Direct exposure of the popliteal vessel and popliteal arteriography should be employed in certain cases where "runoff" is not shown by femoral dye injection before considering such patients ineligible for intimectomy or by-pass grafting.
