Abstract
At the clinical convention in Las Vegas, Charles L. Hudson, MD, observed that the American Medical Association has too long been preoccupied with constructing jurisdictional boundaries between the private and the public sectors of medicine. No violence would have been done had he extended this critique to academic medicine as well. Our preoccupation with teaching and research has too often and too long led us away from assuming responsibility for the interface between private and public medicine and between academic and community medicine. Today the university can no longer ignore this vitally important frontier. We believe that the time has come for the university to reach into the community and engage in direct action, in service, and teaching, and research, in this setting.
